About M.F. (Fran) Piraino

As a former sports reporter with The Post-Standard and Syracuse.com, I covered a variety of sports during my tenure from 1998 to 2009 , including varsity and college women's lacrosse. I continue to stay involved in girls lacrosse as a volunteer administrative assistant with the Section 3 Girls Lacrosse Committee.

Since leaving my full-time gig at the Post-Standard in 2009, I work as freelance writer/editor. My articles have appeared in the Syracuse New Times, The Good Life: Central New York Magazine, the Utica Observer Dispatch and many other publications. I also cover bowling and golf as a contributing writer for Syracuse.com.

In addition to my professional work, I spent more than decade being a lacrosse mom to my daughters, Dayna and Marlise. Both grew up playing the sport and competed for the Henninger/Nottingham program in high school before playing Division III college lacrosse at the College at Brockport.

I've lived in Syracuse my entire life. I received my BA in English/Communications from Le Moyne College (Class of 1984), where I also played basketball.

Besides lacrosse, my other area of expertise is bowling. I'm a member of the Syracuse Bowling Association Hall of Fame for distinguished service.

Does my last name sound familiar? Local bowling legend Marty Piraino was a distant cousin (by marriage). My oldest daughter, Marlise, was an assistant varsity girls lacrosse coach for Bishop Ludden/Bishop Grimes. My youngest, Dayna, is an assistant JV coach at Liverpool. She also coached with the Salt City Snipers Club Team.
